Wilhelmshöhe Palace, built in Kassel in 1786, is an impressive embodiment of the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. The renowned architect Simon Louis du Ry was responsible for the design, with support from Heinrich Christoph Jussow and Johann Conrad Giesler. The palace is surrounded by a park planned by esteemed garden architects Wilhelm Biermann and Friedrich Hildebrandt.
Historically, Wilhelmshöhe Palace has witnessed numerous significant events. It was partially destroyed during World War II but was lovingly restored between 1954 and 1974. During the war years, the palace served as a field hospital.
Originally built as a residence for the Hessian Landgrave Friedrich II and his family, it was not only a representative location but also a cultural center where many important figures would gather. An impressive art collection found its home here and can still be admired today at the Wilhelmshöhe Palace Museum.

In 2013, the ensemble was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as “Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe.” It is Europe’s largest hillside park in the style of an English landscape garden and is particularly known for the Hercules monument, Kassel’s landmark, and the water features.
