Marienburg Castle, situated atop Marienberg in Pattensen, Lower Saxony, is an outstanding example of Neo-Gothic architecture. It was designed in 1857 by architect Georg Adolf Demmler, who also supervised its construction. The castle park, a work of renowned landscape architect Hermann Jansen, complements the ensemble harmoniously.
King George V of Hanover, who ascended the throne in 1851 after the death of his father, King Ernst August I, initiated the construction of the castle as a symbol of royal power and splendor. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), Marienburg Castle served as a military hospital, and during the time of National Socialism it was used as a representation seat of the House of Welf. After World War II, it was briefly occupied by British troops before being returned to the House of Hanover.
Until the abolition of the monarchy in 1918, it remained in the possession of the House of Welf and served as their summer residence. Later, it was taken over by the Provincial Administration of Hanover and today serves as a museum and event venue.
The architectural details of Marienburg Castle, especially the delicate Neo-Gothic embellishments, gables, towers, and turrets, create a fairytale-like sight. Inside, visitors can admire intricately designed rooms and magnificent wall and ceiling decorations. Guided tours provide deep insights into the history of this impressive building.
As a popular tourist destination, Marienburg Castle attracts numerous visitors who appreciate both the impressive architecture and the idyllic landscape. With the castle and park as a backdrop, it is especially weddings, events, and concerts that find an unforgettable setting here.
