The Eberbach Monastery, located in the picturesque Rheingau region in Hesse, masterfully exemplifies the architectural styles of Romanesque and Gothic and is among the most prominent examples of this style of architecture in Germany. Founded in 1136, its construction was significantly influenced by Bernhard von Clairvaux, an outstanding French Cistercian monk and theologian. Under his guidance, the monastery developed into a significant spiritual center.

The history of Eberbach Monastery is rich and diverse. It experienced plundering and destruction during the Thirty Years’ War but was able to be rebuilt over the years. Throughout the centuries, the monastery was not only a religious but also an economic center. The viticulture, in particular, thrived, and with the famous Eberbach Steinberg, the monastery possessed one of the most renowned vineyards known for its premium wines.

In the 19th century, the usage of the monastery changed. After its dissolution, it served as a state estate and was used as a distillery, hospital, and school, among other things. One noteworthy aspect of its history is its role as a film location for “The Name of the Rose,” where the historical walls and the idyllic surroundings added a special touch to the film.

Today, Eberbach Monastery is administered by a foundation and opens its doors to visitors. In its museum, interested individuals can delve into the fascinating history of the monastery and the life of the Cistercians. Additionally, it serves as a venue for various events, from concerts to wine festivals.

Eberbach Monastery is a proud part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, a recognition of its historical relevance and impressive architecture that harmoniously blends into the landscape of Rheingau. It attracts numerous visitors from all over the world who appreciate its unique atmosphere and history.
