The Eltz Castle, which is picturesquely located on a rock in the Elzbach Valley in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is an outstanding example of medieval architecture. Since the 12th century, it has been one of the most admired castles in the country.

Architecturally, Eltz Castle presents itself as a combination of several eras: from Romanesque to Gothic and Renaissance to Baroque. The medieval courtyard and the different towers, which reflect the span of their construction, are among its most impressive features. Numerous talented builders, including Nikolaus von Kues and Thomas Schenk von Schmidtburg, contributed to its appearance.

Historically, Eltz Castle has a solid place in the annals of Germany. It remained unscathed during the Thirty Years’ War and provided protection to significant personalities such as Emperor Charles V and the Elector of Trier. Over the years, it was involved in numerous regional conflicts and witnessed several changes of ownership and sieges.

The castle mainly served as a residence for the Counts of Eltz, who still own it today. The family, one of the oldest noble families in Europe, produced many outstanding personalities, including the theologian Johannes von Eltz, the jurist Johann Hugo von Eltz, and the poet Karl von Eltz-Rübenach.

Currently, Eltz Castle is divided into a museum and a private living area. Visitors can explore parts of the castle and immerse themselves in its medieval past, with splendidly furnished rooms, an extensive collection of weapons, and impressive architecture standing out in particular. In addition to captivating its guests, the castle offers an unforgettable view of the picturesque landscape. Although Eltz Castle is of great importance due to its historical relevance and impressive structure, it has not yet been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
