Biebrich Palace, situated on the picturesque banks of the Rhine in Wiesbaden, Hesse, is a magnificent example of baroque architecture in Germany. Built in 1702, it stands as a testament to the artistic construction of this era and is surrounded by a generous park landscape.
The responsible architect, Johann Maximilian von Welsch, designed it as a summer residence for Prince Georg August Samuel von Nassau-Idstein. Although the construction took several decades and was implemented under various construction managers, a harmonious overall work was created. Another highlight is the associated park, in the design of which the renowned garden architect Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell played a significant role.
Throughout its history, Biebrich Palace changed owners several times, always remaining in the possession of Nassau lines. After being heavily damaged in World War II, the palace was lovingly restored between 1980 and 1982.
The palace, which was briefly occupied by French troops during the Seven Years’ War, served as the residence of the Duke of Nassau in the 19th century. With splendidly decorated rooms such as the White and Blue Halls, it offers insights into the baroque lifestyle of the 18th century.
Today, Biebrich Palace serves as the official residence of the Minister-President of Hesse and provides both locals and tourists with an impressive backdrop with its majestic park and views of the Rhine. However, it is not listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
