The Rötteln Castle, majestically located near Lörrach in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, was built in 1102. With an impressive history of over 900 years, it stands out particularly for its Gothic architecture and has earned the nickname “Pearl on the Upper Rhine”.
Originally built for territorial security and defense, Rötteln Castle was initially owned by the noble family of the Margraves of Hachburg. In the 14th century, it passed into the possession of the Margraviate of Baden. Especially during the Thirty Years’ War, the fortress served as protection for the local population. In later times, it functioned as a state fortress and temporarily as a prison.
The complex includes numerous buildings, including the palas and an impressive keep. With a height of 32 meters, the keep offers breathtaking panoramic views of the picturesque surroundings.
Today, Rötteln Castle attracts tourists from all over the world. Managed by Röttelnbund GmbH, extensive measures are taken to preserve and maintain this historic structure. Visitors can embark on guided tours of the castle and admire exhibits in the on-site museum that provide deep insights into the history of the castle and the region.
