Rantzau Castle, located in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein, is an outstanding example of 16th-century Renaissance architecture. Built in 1582 according to a design by the Danish architect Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder, it was realized under the supervision of the construction manager Heinrich Rantzau.
This architectural gem bears witness to a rich history and has preserved its original character despite the turmoil of several wars and sieges. Over the centuries, the castle has experienced numerous changes of ownership, each leaving their own traces in the form of architectural adjustments and extensions. One of the most remarkable modifications was the addition of a Baroque wing in the 18th century by the architect Peter Christoph Hagemann.
For generations, Rantzau Castle was the magnificent seat of the noble Rantzau family, which played a key role in the history of Schleswig-Holstein and left its mark on the region in many ways. Many members of this influential family have left their mark on the castle over the centuries.
Today, Rantzau Castle opens its doors to the public as a museum. Visitors can admire the opulent interiors and the artistically designed castle gardens. The museum houses an impressive collection of historical artifacts, furniture, and paintings that vividly depict the history of the region. In addition, the museum regularly offers changing special exhibitions and cultural events that attract both locals and tourists.
