The Harburg Castle, built in 1150, stands majestically in the state of Bavaria and represents an impressive example of medieval architecture. Its construction combines both Romanesque and Gothic elements, telling the story of different building phases and architects throughout the centuries.
One of the outstanding architects was Konrad II, who significantly contributed to the expansion and shaping of the castle’s current appearance in the 13th century. Eventually, it came into the possession of the Oettingen family. Despite the turmoil of World War II, it managed to preserve its historical substance.
Initially designed as a defensive fortress, Harburg Castle served various functions throughout history, ranging from a military garrison to a royal residence. Today, the castle, inhabited by the Oettingen-Wallerstein family, also houses a museum that provides visitors with an insight into the fascinating history of the fortress and its region.
